What is Skate Don’t Hate?
The skaters of Central Maine Derby believe that everyone should live in a world without bullying. Because of this, we started Skate Don’t Hate, our own anti-bullying program, to be able to share this belief. Through this program, our skaters present at local schools and talk to kids about promoting tolerance & acceptance, working as a team, respecting diversity & speaking out against bullying.
We present at local schools and talk to students about our past experiences as well as what they can do to promote tolerance and acceptance. We speak about how derby girls come together to play as a team, how we celebrate and respect diversity, and how we speak out against biased-based behaviors. The presentations also include skating demonstrations and the chance for a few audience members to play sock derby with real derby girls!
Central Maine Derby’s Skate Don’t Hate program has so far presented at elementary and middle schools in the greater Bangor and Central Maine area, as well as Camp Capella in Holden. We visit schools all over the state of Maine to give Skate Don’t Hate presentations!
